A Typical Friday Evening Dinner

In the old days (and in some cases, even today), meat was never served on a Friday, even if it was not the season of Lent.  Lent, as many of you might know, is when Jesus roamed in the desert for 40 days and was tempted by the devil before he faced a trial which condemed him to death.  So for these 40 days the Roman Catholics believe they have to follow the same tradition, to deprive themselves of certain things to recognize Christ's suffering.  The simplest way is to not eat meat on a Friday during Lent.  Others make bigger sacrifices by giving up meat all together for Lent, or something they really love like chocolate or candy.

In any case, on a Friday, in an old school Italian home you will never find meat of any kind.  Pizza, fish, linguine with clam sauce, yes, meat, no.
