Italian Wins Science Oscar
Italian engineer Federico Faggin, inventor of the microchip, was awarded with the Science Oscar at the Computer Museum in Bozeman, Montana. Two of Mr. Faggin's American colleagues, Marcian Hoff and Stan Mazer, were also honored. The three collaborated in 1971 on the invention of the very first microprocessor capable of artificial intelligence. The resulting explosion in the popularity of personal computers and modern telecommunications owe their development and success to the discovery. Mr. Faggin, 60, was born in Palladio in the province of Vicenza. He transferred to California in 1965 to take a job with Fairchild Conductor, but later left the company and moved with his wife Emma to what is now called Silicon Valley.
