2300º Celebrates Venini: Masterpieces of Italian Design

We invite you to Celebrate 2300º and the Opening of Venini: Masterpieces of Italian Desgin. November's 2300º, a free event at the The Corning Museum of Glass, will be held Thursday, November 15, 2001, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and will celebrate the public opening of the winter show, Venini: Masterpieces of Italian Design. Highlighted by the shimmering beauty of

Italian glass that blazes with color and patterns, this month's event features savory delicacies sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission, the sounds of traditional Italian music, from arias to wedding marches, and 25% to 50% off Italian glass in the GlassMarket.

November's 2300º compares and contrasts a snapshot of Italian American culture with that of traditional Italian culture. The music, a combination of high art and folk art, features the Syracuse Opera and the Sgro Brothers.

Don Davis made his Syracuse Opera debut last season in Così fan tutte. Recent engagements included La Bohème and La belle Helene for Portland Opera and Carlisle Floyd's new opera Cold Sassy Tree for Austin Lyric Opera. This season he also performs Maximilian in Candide for Portland Opera and FortWorth Opera.

Dom and Tony, the Sgro Brothers, have played worldwide, ranging from spots such as the Moulin Rouge, in Hollywood, to the Palladium, in London, and have played with the biggest names in show business, including Dean Martin, Perry Como, and Frank Sinatra.

"This month, we have combined the unexpected and curious combinations typical of 2300º with the public opening of our first winter show in decades," said Steve Gibbs, Manager of Interpretive Programming and program organizer. "The cultures we highlight this month have the same roots, although they are distinctly different."

November's 2300º spotlights artist Emrys Berkower who has been working with glass and demonstrating glassworking techniques since 1992. Much of his own work has been influenced by the great glass artists of Italy during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s and is reminiscent of the work showcased in Venini: Masterpieces of Italian Design. After working at studios across the country, Berkower settled in Corning, N.Y., and serves as both the Manager of Lost Angel and a teacher at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass.

2300º refers to the temperature of the glassblower's reheating furnace known as the glory hole. This year's final 2300º is scheduled for December 20, 2001, and will celebrate the Winter Solstice American Style.

The Corning Museum of Glass, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is an independent, non-profit, educational institution, dedicated to the art, history, research, and exhibition of glass. The Museum houses more than 35,000 pieces of glass which represent 3,500 years of craftsmanship and design. The Museum, the world's most comprehensive collection of glass, is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
