Las Vegas Adds Ethnic Paper
By John G. Edwards, The Las Vegas Review-Journal
November 3, 2001 - - Las Vegas, which has ethnic newspapers for Jewish, black, Asian and Hispanic residents, now has one for Italian - Americans.
La Voce Publishing Co., owned by lawyer Dominic Gentile and others, published its first 56-page issue in October. It is preparing a second issue for release early next week.
"Our objective is to create a virtual neighborhood, a virtual community," said Gentile, the publisher.
The latest census indicates the county has 120,000 residents who consider themselves Italian - American , he said. Public records indicate that 1,400 businesses are licensed to people with Italian surnames, and more than 40,000 real estate properties are owned by people with Italian last names.
The company printed 3,000 copies for Volume 1, No. 1, but Gentile hopes to reach 10,000 by December. The tabloid is distributed without charge at locations around the city, but mail subscriptions cost $36 a year.
While the owners hope to make a profit, they are primarily interested in giving Italian - Americans a voice in the Las Vegas area, Gentile said. Gentile, an attorney for broadcasters and newspaper publishers, said La Voce will take an Italian - American viewpoint on some issues, but it will seek to be fair and balanced.
The first edition contains an article that the Augustus Society named former Assembly Speaker Joe Dini, D-Yerington, its Italian - American of the year. The cover story profiles New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. There's a fashion story about garters, a news item about the annual convention of the Italian - American Historical Association and a story about teenage actress-artist Julianne Michelle.
Its full-page ads include Vespa motor scooters, shows at the Riviera and Tom Saitta Integrity Chrysler Plymouth.
Len Galassi is editor; Nick Paglia; advertising director; and Kevin Castano, production manager.
