Roman Catholic Resources: Patron Saints

St. Veronica

Patron Saint of Laundresses
Feast Day Celebrated on July 15

Born in Italy and wife of a Roman officer, she lived in the first century and is said to have wiped Christ’s brow as he carried his cross. A photosensitive phenomenon, “vera icon” Jesus miraculously appeared on cloth.  Veronica took her treasure to Rome and healed the ailing Emperor and then gave it to Pope St. Clement. Sometimes called the “vernicle”.  The cloth now resides in St. Peter's Basilica.  On occasion, it glows with an otherworldly light and the imprint of Jesus blushes. Officially she is the patron saint of laundresses, but Veronica could easily be associated with photographers and filmmakers, who are lacking a designated saint to guide them.
